Cyclospora concerns affecting local businesses
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Cyclospora, a parasite linked to fresh produce, continues to spread in Kansas, with 400 confirmed cases on Friday, although the number is likely much higher.
Restaurants and farms in Kansas are seeing an increase in business as people turn to local producers due to concerns surrounding Cyclospora.
When it comes to local produce, Serenity Farm is about as local as you can get.
“When you get our produce, it’s within a day or two of picking,” said Tiffany Diltz, owner and operator of Serenity Farm.
“We don’t use any synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, anything like that,” Diltz said.

As Cyclospora cases continue to mount across the U.S., shoppers from Kentucky to Michigan are flocking to local farmers’ markets in search of safer produce. But are farmers’ markets actually less risky than grocery stores when it comes to avoiding cyclosporiasis and other foodborne illnesses?
Some food-safety experts say farmers’ markets could be a safer bet, though that depends on where the produce actually comes from and the practices of the individual farmer. “If you are getting produce directly from the farmer who grew it, I would consider that lower risk,” says Kalmia Kniel, a professor of microbial food safety at the University of Delaware.
