Netflix Sued For $105 Million After Hard Drive of Unreleased Nicolas Cage Movie Was Stolen From Its Office

A theft at Netflix's Los Angeles office of an unreleased film has sparked a lawsuit from makers of the movie, titled Fortitude.

In a lawsuit filed on Thursday in California federal court, writer-producer Simon Afram and his company, Op-Fortitude, accuse Netflix of compromising the sale of the World War II spy thriller by losing a copy of the movie that was shared for screening. He seeks at least $105 million.

An unencrypted master copy of the movie was in one of several drives that were stolen from Netflix's office last month. In an investigation, the company concluded that the other drives were empty, according a source at Netflix.

Makers of unreleased $45m film Fortitude sue after hard drive stolen from streamer’s Los Angeles office

Netflix is being sued for $105m over the theft of a hard drive including an unreleased Nicolas Cage war movie.

The streamer’s Los Angeles office was the target of a theft involving a number of hard drives, one of which contained a copy of second world war spy thriller Fortitude.

The makers of the $45m-budgeted film are now suing Netflix over the loss.

“Netflix disputes any claim that it bears the risk of loss for a film delivered without the proper industry-standard safeguards,” a spokesperson said in a statement shared with the Hollywood Reporter. “While we do not own the rights to Fortitude, we take content security seriously and have taken extra measures to support the film-maker and his team. This includes conducting a thorough investigation and offering to monitor known piracy sites for any unauthorized distribution or sale.”

Netflix Hit With $105 Million Suit After Losing Copy of Nicolas Cage WWII Film

A film producer sued Netflix for $105 million on Wednesday after the company lost an unencrypted copy of his World War II film “Fortitude,” starring Nicolas Cage and Ben Kingsley.

Simon Afram, a Swiss businessman, wrote the script and spent seven years and $45 million bringing it to the screen, according to his lawsuit. The complaint states that an associate producer dropped off a digital cinema package at Netflix headquarters in June so that the company could consider whether to buy the rights.

But when the associate producer tried to retrieve the film, Netflix became unresponsive, according to the complaint. More than a week later, after repeated efforts to arrange a pickup, Netflix acknowledged via email that the film had been stolen.
