Itâs been 16 days since Wells and his friends went on a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island â a popular destination for holiday revelers off the Mississippi coast with no shelters, no facilities and no communications.
His friends made it back home. Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, did not. His body was found two days later, on July 6, facedown in the water off the shoreline of Horn Island by a National Park Service agent.

Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, said they would use the occasion to celebrate the life of their son, who she described as a "bright light" and a "sensitive soul."

Nolan Wells’ funeral to be held Monday in Mississippi
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — The funeral for Nolan Wells, the teenage football star whose body was found on the shores of Mississippi’s Horn Island days after he went missing July 4, will be held Monday morning.
The service will be held at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where Wells is from. The Wells family’s attorney, Ben Crump, is set to deliver the call for justice; civil rights leader the Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver Wells’ eulogy.
NBC News saw Wells’ casket arrive at the church just before 9 a.m. local time.
Hundreds of people stood in line outside the church ahead of the service at noon local time, waiting to get in for the visitation, including almost the entire Ocean Springs High School football team. The funeral turnout is expected to be large.
