Mixed results as volumes ease
The market remains sensitive to volume changes currently, with a mixed bag for indicators this week and slight improvement overall as volumes eased.
The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) finished 5¢ higher to 1909¢ in Australian Dollar (AUD) terms and up 13¢ to 1325¢ in United States dollar (USD) terms. The bale offering fell by 10% this week to 28,960. Buyers were more willing to acquire wool on offer at this week’s prices and with less to choose from the pass in rate fell to 5.7%, which was down from 16.9% the week before. In total 27,307 bales were sold, which is 15% below the average for the past 12 months.
Merino fleece lifts Australian wool market after two-week decline
The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) gained 5 cents to 1,909 ac/kg, while the Western Market Indicator (WMI) climbed 22 cents to 2,094 ac/kg. In US-dollar terms, the EMI rose 13 US cents and the WMI increased 26 US cents, despite a stronger Australian dollar.
Medium Merino fleece recorded the strongest gains, rising 25-30 cents, while fine Merinos improved by 5-10 cents. Buyer competition was particularly evident in the Fremantle selling centre, reflecting renewed confidence in Merino wool.
In contrast, crossbred wool prices weakened by 20-25 cents on average, with the sharpest declines in finer crossbred fleece of 28 micron and finer. Merino cardings also eased by 10-15 cents, indicating buyer resistance outside the main Merino fleece categories.
