NBC Quietly Canceled Show After Just 2 Seasons – But Netflix Could Save It

Late last month, NBC continued to move forward with a significant content overhaul heading into the 2026-27 broadcasting calendar with the cancellation of another show.

Just weeks prior, news broke that the network canceled medical drama Brilliant Minds, and comedy show Stumble, which received a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes from fans.

The Hunting Party, created by JJ Bailey, was the last 2025-26 broadcast series whose fate had not been determined, according to Deadline. NBC postponed the decision until after the upfronts as its executives took extra time to evaluate the show’s performance on both linear and streaming.

The series received a slight ratings bump when it started streaming on Netflix and Peacock, but not enough to move the needle. According to Deadline, NBC considered both a third season on the broadcast network and a switch to a Peacock original, but “in the end, after some number-crunching, neither option panned out.”

‘The Hunting Party’ Journey Officially Ends As Cast Options Expire

The Hunting Party is done hunting. The options on the cast expired yesterday and were not extended by series producer Universal Television, Deadline has learned. With the actors released, the efforts to extend the show’s life are officially over.

The same applies to the NBC drama pilot Key Witness, starring Emily Deschanel, also produced by Universal Television. The project, which narrowly missed the cut for a series order at the network, also was taken out and drew some interest from ABC, I hear. It’s the end of the road for the pilot too, as its cast options lapsed.

It's Officially the End of an Era for Action Crime Thriller After Two Seasons

For some TV franchises centered around criminal investigations, it seems like they have been around for decades. In some cases, it's because a series literally has had decades of episodes, while in other cases, a series will expand with spin-offs and prequels, making it feel like it has earned enough chapters to double or triple its legacy. This isn't always the case, however, and some TV procedurals have the plug pulled on them much earlier.

Such is the case with NBC's The Hunting Party, which ran for two seasons on the network. The series followed an elite team of agents who were tasked with tracking down the nation's deadliest killers who somehow managed to escape a high-security prison. The series earned promising ratings on NBC and on Peacock, as well as on Netflix when NBC had licensed episodes out to that streamer. Unfortunately, it was confirmed in June that NBC was canceling the series.
