Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that it is set to release The Comebacker theatrically on July 30, 2027. Hanks stars in the movie that Marielle Heller helms from her own script, which adapts Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name.
The Comebacker stars Hanks as a pitching coach whose life is changed dramatically after he gets beaned in the head with a hit ball while standing at the mound.
Playtone and Leah Holzer produce the project in cooperation with Major League Baseball.

The pic, as Deadline first told you, reteams the 2x Oscar winner with filmmaker Marielle Heller who directed the actor in the Mister Rogers movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Hanks received an Oscar nomination in the supporting actor category for his turn as Rogers in the 2019 Heller production. Based on a short story by Dave Eggers that was turned into a script by Heller, the film is a love letter to baseball and offers a plum part to an up-and-coming leading man. Hanks plays the pitching coach of a major league hurler whose life is upended when he is hit in the head by a line drive on the mound. The devastating comebacker changes his life in all kinds of ways.
