Amsterdam urges residents to hang curtains outside as heatwave tests homes built for winter
As temperatures climb in the Netherlands, Amsterdam officials are encouraging residents to try an unusually simple way to keep homes cooler: hang curtains or even bedsheets on the outside of their windows.
That inexpensive tactic may help in houses built to trap warmth during cold northern European winters, improving indoor comfort and potentially reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling.
With a heatwave driving temperatures up across the Netherlands, Amsterdam's public health institute urged people to keep direct sunlight off their windows, as The Guardian reported.
The government also put its national heatwave plan into effect, with special attention on older adults and other vulnerable people.
Code red extended into Saturday as temperature tops 37°
The KNMI weather bureau has extended its code red weather warning for the provinces of Limburg, Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel into Saturday as the heatwave continues.
The temperature topped 37° in the south of the country on Friday as 30° plus temperatures covered all of the country apart from some of the Wadden Sea islands.
More events scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled because of the heat, including Saturday’s military parade to mark Veterans’ Day. Several festivals and concerts have also been scrapped.
Hospital accident and emergency departments report seeing a rise in patients with heat-related ailments, doctor Yara Basta told broadcaster NOS. In particular people with asthma and COPD are suffering worse symptoms because of the heat. “We are also seeing an increase in heart complaints,” she said.
