Atlanta weather: Tropical low brings flash flood risk to Georgia

Forecasters track Potential Tropical Cyclone Number One as it triggers rain pockets in Henry County. The system brings heavy tropical moisture from the northwestern Gulf, threatening to drop up to 4 inches of rain by Friday.

ATLANTA – A powerful tropical takeover is pushing into Georgia, bringing widespread storms and a severe flash flood threat to metro Atlanta and North Georgia. 

The FOX 5 Storm Team is declaring Thursday and Friday as Storm Alert Days, meaning you will want to be weather aware due to the weather threat.

A Flood Watch is in effect from Thursday morning through late Friday morning for Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Crawford, Crisp, Dooly, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Greene, Hancock, Washington, Barrow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Henry, Morgan, Newton, Rockdale, Fulton, Walton, Oconee, Bartow, Carroll, Haralson, Paulding, Polk, Chattahoochee, Coweta, Harris, Heard, Lamar, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Spalding, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson and Webster.

FIRST ALERT : Flood watch issued as heavy rain and strong storms will arrive later this week

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — All eyes on Potential Tropical Cyclone One as it has the potential to become our first tropical storm of the season. If it organizes, it will become Arthur. Either way, deep tropical moisture is headed our way and is prompting two First Alert Weather Days – Thursday & Friday.

A Flood Watch is in effect from Thursday morning through late Friday night for much of North Georgia. Here’s what you need to know:

What’s the threat? Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are expected starting Thursday morning and continuing through Friday evening. The tropical moisture moving in will support high rain rates, with widespread rainfall of 2 to 4 inches possible. Some areas could see 5 inches or more. Urban areas and places with poor drainage are most susceptible to flash flooding.
