In Canada, Elections and Defections Likely to Help Carney’s Liberals Gain Majority
Prime Minister Mark Carney, constrained by leading a minority government for the past year, gained a majority in the House of Commons after special elections on Monday.
After months of backroom political intrigue, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada on Monday gained a majority in the House of Commons after special parliamentary elections, solidifying the Liberal Party’s hold on power.
Since late last year, five members of opposition parties have joined the Liberals, one as recently as last week, bringing Mr. Carney within a single vote of the 172 needed for a majority. CBC News projected on Monday night that Liberal candidates won two of the three elections, giving Mr. Carney a majority.

Carney’s Liberals will now be able to pass legislation without the support of opposition parties – and govern until 2029
Canadian prime minister Mark Carney has secured a parliamentary majority for his Liberal government, CBC News reported. The victory will help him push through a legislative agenda he says is needed for an increasingly divided geopolitical world.
Three special elections were held on Monday in Ontario and Quebec, with two in districts – known as ridings – that have long voted Liberal.
The party has secured the riding of University-Rosedale, CBC News said. The results of the other two elections were still being counted. The win takes Carney’s Liberals to 172 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons.
