Stephen Jackson and Mike Bibby were close friends long before they made it to the NBA. Between the two, Jackson was the first to enter the pros, being drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1997; however, prior to all of this, the pair had envisioned themselves forming a duo at the University of Arizona.
That would’ve been a reality had Jackson managed to meet Arizona’s academic requirements. Despite that, Bibby didn’t let his friend down. In fact, it was actually Bibby’s mom who helped Stak get drafted when she took him to the Suns' practice facility.
While Bibby was hitting his stride with the Arizona Wildcats, leading the team to an NCAA title in 1997, Jackson failed to make the final roster and was waived by the Suns before even stepping onto the NBA court. Even so, Stak did get paid as part of the deal and decided to splurge his first NBA paycheck worth $25,000 alongside Bibby right after he cashed out.
