NFL free agency: Lions lose depth defender to Cowboys
The Detroit Lions have lost another defender to free agency: EDGE Tyrus Wheat.
Yet another Detroit Lions defender is leaving via free agency. As first reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Lions defensive end Tyrus Wheat is signing a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. Per Aaron Wilson, it’s a one-year deal worth $1,755,000.
Wheat will rejoin the Cowboys—where his NFL career started in 2023 after going undrafted—following just a single season with Detroit. The Lions claimed Wheat off of waivers after the 26-year-old defensive lineman failed to make the Cowboys’ 53-man roster. Wheat would go on to to play in 15 games with the Lions as a rotational edge player. He played a total of just 66 defensive snaps, earned 15 tackles, one tackle for loss and 1.5 sacks over that time. With that limited playing time, PFF gave him an 82.3 overall grade, mostly bolstred by a strong game against the Buccaneers (1.5 sacks on just nine snaps).
Cowboys free agency: Dallas bringing back pass rusher Tyrus Wheat
The Dallas Cowboys are bringing back an old friend. Wednesday is the start of the new league year in an official capacity, 4pm ET is the time to watch, which is when deals like Jalen Thompson, Rashan Gary, so on and so forth, can all be formally processed.
You can now add another one to the list for the Cowboys.
It was reported on Wednesday that the Cowboys are bringing back Tyrus Wheat. The Cowboys were Wheat’s first NFL team before he left to join the Detroit Lions, and he is now back in the fold.
Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was specific in noting that Wheat helps the Cowboys in a special teams capacity, so it feels like that is probably where he slots in here.

Cowboys agree to terms with Tyrus Wheat
According to multiple reports, Wheat has agreed to sign with the Cowboys. Wheat played in Dallas during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, but left to play for the Lions in 2025.
The Lions opted not to tender Wheat with a contract as an exclusive rights free agent, which left him available to return to the Cowboys.
Wheat had 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 15 appearances for Detroit last season. He had 17 tackles and a half-sack in his 20 appearances with the Cowboys during his first stint with the team.
