Bernie Moreno: Don’t trade clean rivers for big tech data centers
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, is criticizing a proposed Ohio Environmental Protection Agency policy that would allow data centers to discharge untreated water into public waterways.
Moreno posted on X, “Ohio should not compromise the integrity of our waterways to help data centers. The companies putting these centers up have so much money we expect the water going back into our rivers to be cleaner than ever before!”
Ohio has more than 100 data centers that process data for artificial intelligence, social media and other technology platforms. Companies operating facilities in the state include Meta, Google, Amazon and Amazon Web Services. Data centers use significant amounts of water to cool equipment.
