San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has removed himself from consideration for head-coaching vacancies across the NFL, league sources said Saturday, and opted to stay with the Niners.
Kubiak has been with San Francisco since 2021 and risen through the ranks of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s staff. He was the 49ers’ assistant quarterbacks coach when they drafted Brock Purdy in 2022, moved to passing game specialist in 2024 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2025.
Shanahan first gave Kubiak play-calling duties in the 2024 regular-season finale — it was a meaningless game, though the 49ers rolled up 436 yards of offense — and did so again during the 2025 preseason. After the Niners’ wild-card playoff win, Shanahan noted that Kubiak, who coaches from the booth, suggested the “Skyy Bang Reverse Pass” trick play — Jauan Jennings’ touchdown throw to Christian McCaffrey — that turned the tide against Philadelphia.
1 Raiders Potential Candidate Removes Himself from HC Consideration
The Las Vegas Raiders coaching search has taken several unexpected turns, both big and small. That continued to be the case on Saturday, as the Raiders were notified of yet another unexpected turn in their offseason search to fill their vacant head coaching position.
The Raiders have left no stone unturned since the end of the season, interviewing and requesting interviews with more than 10 candidates. The list seems to grow daily, with the likes of Brian Daboll added late in the process. However, the list also continues to lose candidates.
The Raiders are reportedly looking for a young, offensive-minded coach to fill their vacant head coaching position. San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator Klay Kubiak fits that description and undoubtedly has the potential to lead a team one day in the future.

Steelers Coaching Candidate Chooses to Remove Himself from Consideration
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ list of coaching candidates got shorter on Saturday. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak chose to stay in the Bay Area in his current position.
“49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has removed himself from consideration for head coaching vacancies, per sources,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini wrote Saturday on X. “The Raiders and Steelers had requested to interview him. He prefers to keep working with Kyle Shanahan.”
Kubiak just finished his fifth season on Shanahan’s 49ers staff and his first as the team’s offensive coordinator. He was the Niners’ offensive passing game specialist last season and served as the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022 and 2023. Before that, he was a defensive quality control coach in 2021.
