Cubs To Sign Tyler Austin To Major League Deal
The Cubs and first baseman Tyler Austin have agreed to a one-year major league deal, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. He’ll make $1.25MM plus incentives, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Austin has spent the past six seasons playing in Japan. The Cubs have multiple 40-man vacancies and won’t need to make a corresponding move.
Austin, now 34, played in the big leagues from 2016 to 2019. He suited up for the Yankees, Twins, Giants and Brewers without being able to cement himself as a big league regular. He hit 33 home runs in 583 plate appearances over four seasons but also struck out at a 36.9% clip.
Chicago Cubs sign Tyler Austin
This was not an expected signing by the Chicago Cubs baseball team:
Tyler Austin, who came up with the Yankees and became a power hitting star with the Yokohama Bay Stars, agrees to Cubs deal. $1.25M plus incentives.
Hmm, I said. This is not a player I’m familiar with, and probably, neither are you.
Tyler Austin was the Yankees’ 13th round pick out of high school in Georgia in 2013. He made his MLB debut in 2016 and played parts of four seasons for the Yankees, Twins, Brewers and Giants, batting .219/.292/.451 with 33 home runs in 583 plate appearances.
Then he went to play in Japan. And over the last six years in NPB with the Yokohama Bay Stars, Austin batted .293/.377/.568 with 85 home runs in 403 games.
