Lions TE LaPorta (back) sidelined against Eagles

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a back injury.

LaPorta, 24, did not practice this week. The 2023 Pro Bowler is second on the team in receiving yards (489) with 40 receptions and three touchdowns.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said his confidence level was "sky high" in Lions tight end Brock Wright to play without LaPorta.

"Brock's a guy we don't talk a lot about, but he's the jack of all trades. He does everything for us: pass protect, run block, he can run some routes, he plays special teams," Campbell said Friday. "He's one of the most dependable players we have on this team."

Detroit Lions downgrade 4 players to OUT, add Isaac TeSlaa as Questionable

The Detroit Lions will not activate any injured players this week, downgrading four to OUT. Add WR to injury report.

The Detroit Lions announced on Saturday that they will not activate any of their players from their injury lists and have downgraded guard Miles Frazier (knee, PUP), EDGE Marcus Davenport (shoulder, IR), linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (ACL, PUP), and corner D.J. Reed (hamstring, IR) to OUT. Additionally, the Lions have added rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa to their injury report (oblique) and list him as questionable.

The biggest surprise here is that Rodriguez was not activated to the 53-man roster. Throughout his recovery, the belief was that Rodriguez was targeting the Eagles game for his return. With three weeks of practices under the injury evaluation umbrella—including practicing in full in all three practices this week—things looked as if they were lining up for his return. Unfortunately, that move did not happen.

Sam LaPorta out for Detroit Lions vs Eagles; Campbell confidence 'sky-high' in other TEs

If the Detroit Lions are going to knock off the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and improve their chances of getting the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, they're going to do so without one of their top offensive weapons, and at last two key starters in their secondary.

The Lions ruled out tight end Sam LaPorta, cornerback Terrion Arnold and safety Kerby Joseph on Friday, Nov. 14, for the matchup of NFC powers at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday (8:20 p.m., NBC).

LaPorta is dealing with a back injury, Arnold is in concussion protocol and Joseph will miss his fourth straight game with a knee injury.
