Kepler banned 80 games by MLB for failed test
Free agent outfielder Max Kepler was suspended 80 games Friday for violating Major League Baseball's drug program.
Kepler, 33, spent the 2025 season as a platoon outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, batting .216/.300/.391 with 18 homers and 52 RBIs in 127 games.
Before that, he spent his entire career with the Minnesota Twins, who originally signed him out of Germany, accumulating 20.6 Baseball-Reference wins above replacement, putting up a .747 OPS and hitting 161 home runs from 2016 to 2024.
A representative for Kepler's agency did not initially respond to a request for comment. Kepler's suspension won't begin until he is signed by a team.
As part of MLB's joint drug prevention and treatment program, Kepler will be automatically ineligible for the 2026 postseason.

Max Kepler has been suspended for 80 games after the veteran outfielder tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Epitrenbolone, Major League Baseball announced on Friday.
Kepler, 32, is a free agent. In 2025, he played 127 games in his lone season with the Philadelphia Phillies, which came after a decade with the Minnesota Twins following his debut in 2015. The lefty-swinging corner outfielder has slashed .235/.316/.425 during his career with 179 homers. Much of that production came against right-handed pitching.
Kepler is coming off a down season with the Phillies, in which he hit just .216/.300/.391 with 18 homers. His OPS+ of 88 was the lowest of his career.

Free agent outfielder Max Kepler has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for Epitrenbolone, a banned performance-enhancing drug, Major League Baseball announced Friday. Kepler played the entire 2025 season with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Under MLB's Joint Drug Agreement, PED suspensions cover regular season and postseason games "in which the Player would have been eligible to play." Kepler can serve the suspension while a free agent, should he remain unsigned. If he does sign, he will not be paid during the suspension. Kepler will not be eligible to play in the 2026 postseason.
Kepler, 33 next month, authored a .216/.300/.391 batting line with 18 home runs in 2025. That includes .216/.305/.399 line against righties. By OPS+, Kepler has been a below-average hitter four times in the last four years. Corner outfield defense is only so valuable. Kepler was likely to settle for a small one-year control prior to the suspension.
