New AD Lovo aims to make Buffs 'global brand'

BOULDER, Colo. — Deion Sanders has a big fan in his new boss.

Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo might not know his way around Boulder just yet — or even his way around his new office building — but he certainly realizes the importance of Sanders, who has put the Buffaloes back on the football map even if he has had only one winning season in three years.

"With Coach Prime's national notoriety and who he is as a person, first and foremost, and his ability to reach a lot farther than maybe some other coaches might be able to because of who he is, I think is a real advantage for us," Lovo said at his introductory news conference Monday.

Deion Sanders' new boss at Colorado addresses $27 million elephant in the room

Deion Sanders’ new athletic director at Colorado had never been to Boulder before he took the job last week and still doesn’t know the words to the Colorado fight song.

But when he gave his first news conference Monday as Sanders’ 37-year-old new boss, Fernando Lovo made sure to mention Colorado’s live bison mascot and how he’d follow Sanders’ lead as coach of the football team.

“I can’t wait to stand in Folsom Field and see Ralphie run for the first time,” said Lovo, who came to Colorado after previously serving as athletic director of New Mexico. “Coach Prime, I’m coming out right behind you, baby. We’re going. OK?”

Urban Meyer Sends Strong Message About Colorado New Athletic Director

When the Colorado Buffaloes named Fernando Lovo as their next athletic director, the move resonated far beyond Boulder, drawing attention from some of the most prominent figures in college football.

Among those offering the loudest praise was three-time national champion coach Urban Meyer, who witnessed firsthand Lovo’s rise from a student assistant at Florida to an indispensable executive at Ohio State and then the NFL.

"He's the best at what he does, regardless of the responsibility," Meyer said of Lovo. "He will be a great athletic director. He's the ultimate team player with extremely high character and high work ethic. He was always a guy I could trust. When he was an undergraduate at Florida, very early on… his reputation started to make its way to me as the head coach. He was a guy that I brought with me to Ohio State. He's elite."
