Penguins’ Heinen, Oilers’ Philp among six on waivers
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Danton Heinen and Edmonton Oilers forward Noah Philp are among six players placed on waivers on Sunday.
New York Islanders defenceman Ethan Bear, Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Marshall Rifai and Utah Mammoth defender Juuso Valimaki have also been waived as the NHL’s holiday roster freeze has been lifted.
Oilers forward David Tomasek is also on unconditional waivers to have his contract terminated.
Heinen, 30, has a goal and an assist in 13 games with Pittsburgh this season. He has also skated in 12 games with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, scoring six goals with 17 points.
The Langley, B.C. native has skated in 579 career NHL games, scoring 97 goals with 243 points. He is in the final season of a two-year, $4.5 million contract.
A fascinating waiver wire option emerges for the Bruins
The Boston Bruins are struggling right now. They entered the three-day Holiday Break on a four-game losing streak and only scored nine goals in those nine losses. Coming out of the break, they were beaten, 4-1, by the Buffalo Sabres to extend their losing streak to five games. Averaging two goals a game is not going to win many games with this Boston squad.
On Sunday morning, before they boarded a plane for Calgary for Monday night's game against the Flames, first-year head coach Marco Sturm held a practice at the KeyBank Center in Western New York. It appears that he is making some big lineup changes going forward, dropping David Pastrnak down to the third line with Marat Khusnutdinov and Fraser Minten. They played well together earlier this month when they were put together.
