Government confirms four-day New Year holiday in 2026

The Government has approved the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs, allowing a swap of the regular working day Friday, January 2 with Saturday, January 10 to create an extended holiday.

Employers in the private sector are encouraged to apply the same holiday schedule for their workers. However, they must still comply with labor regulations and ensure employees receive all entitled benefits. Companies are also urged to negotiate arrangements that further benefit employees where possible.

Vietnamese labor law considers holidays a fundamental right. According to Decree 12/2022/ND-CP, employers violating regulations on weekly rest, annual leave, or public holidays may face fines ranging from $400 to $800 USD. Fines between $80 and $200 USD may also apply if employers deny unpaid or personal leave, or fail to notify authorities about excessive overtime exceeding 200 to 300 hours annually.

Vietnam proposes 4-day New Year break to boost travel and spending

Under the proposal, the working day on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026 would be swapped with Saturday, Jan. 10, enabling a continuous holiday from Thursday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Jan. 4. The ministry said it is seeking feedback from other ministries and agencies, with consultations to be completed Dec. 24.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the plan would give workers a more balanced holiday break, help stimulate domestic tourism and consumer spending and support economic growth, while keeping the total number of annual working days unchanged.

Looking ahead to other holidays in 2026, the ministry said arrangements under the Labor Code would remain unchanged. In April, workers will benefit from two consecutive holiday periods, including a three-day break for the Hung Kings Commemoration Day and a four-day holiday for Reunification Day and International Workers' Day from April 30 to May 3.

Ring in New Year 2026 with a Four-Day Break: Boosting Rest, Spending, and Tourism

Thursday, January 1, 2026, brings a national holiday to celebrate New Year’s Day. However, the jubilance of embarking on a fresh chapter may be dampened somewhat by the fact that the holiday falls in the middle of the week. This means that workers will return to the office for a day before once more enjoying a break over the weekend.

The significance of New Year’s Day may differ from the vibrant Lunar New Year often celebrated in mid-February, but it still carries an aura of tranquility and renewal. It is a moment of introspection as people reflect on the past year and look forward to the new one with anticipation and optimism. This sentiment of hope and positivity is especially pertinent in navigating the complexities of contemporary life.
