NFL playoff picture: Eagles clinch NFC East, eliminate Cowboys from postseason race

Here's how the NFL playoff picture looks three games through the early Sunday games of Week 16. This week has already featured the Philadelphia Eagles clinching the NFC East for the second straight season, the elimination of the Dallas Cowboys from the postseason race, the Chicago Bears taking a big leap in the NFC North and Seattle assuming control of the No. 1 seed in the NFC from the Los Angeles Rams.

1. Seattle Seahawks (12-3)*: Remaining schedule — at Carolina Panthers, at San Francisco 49ers

NFC No. 1 seed-clinching scenario: The Seahawks are in the driver's seat for home-field advantage in the NFC. Two victories to close out the season — at Panthers and at 49ers — will give them the NFC West crown, a first-round bye and home-field throughout the conference playoffs.

Cowboys officially eliminated from NFL playoffs

Despite having three games to play, including Sunday's game with the Chargers at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys have now been officially eliminated from the playoffs.

That occurred on Saturday when the Eagles won the NFC East outright with a 29-18 win over Washington at FedEx Field. That improved Philadelphia to 10-5, pushing away from the Cowboys at 6-6-1. Even a three-game winning streak by Dallas would only net nine wins, falling short of the Eagles. Philly became the first team to win consecutive NFC East titles since 2003 & 2004, breaking a 21-year streak of a different NFC East team claiming the title.

Will Cowboys consider sitting Dak Prescott down the stretch?

Stephen A. Smith weighs in the Cowboys' woes after their loss to the Vikings. (1:48)

FRISCO, Texas — Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells had a famous saying: Football players play football during football season.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott wants to play football even though the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday when the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Washington Commanders.

"This is my job," Prescott said. "This is what I love to do. Sitting out last year and the times before, you don't take getting to play this game for granted. You play every game to win. You play every game with a chance to go to the playoffs or play in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, and if it's not the case when we take the field or whenever it may be, I'm thankful for the opportunity to play this game. And I'm not going to ever pass it up."
