Royals To Acquire Matt Strahm

The Royals are acquiring left-hander Matt Strahm in a trade with the Phillies, according to a report from Robert Murray of FanSided. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that right-hander Jonathan Bowlan is headed to Philadelphia in return for Strahm’s services. The clubs have subsequently announced the trade.

It’s a reunion for Strahm and the Royals, as Kansas City drafted the lefty in the 21st round of the 2012 draft. Strahm made his big league debut for the Royals in 2016 and spent parts of two seasons with the club before being shipped to the Padres in a six-trade alongside Travis Wood and Esteury Ruiz in order to acquire Trevor Cahill, Brandon Mauer, and Ryan Buchter. Strahm had a career 3.81 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 56 2/3 innings at the time of the trade. He’ll now return to Kansas City nearly a decade later with more than 500 MLB innings and an All-Star appearance under his belt.

Report: Strahm ‘likely' to be traded — what it means for Phils

Dave Dombrowski spoke with the media on the state of the Phililes’ outfield on Tuesday.

The Phillies could keep adjusting their bullpen, after adding a veteran arm.

During Tuesday’s media availability, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the club could continue to “look for arms in the bullpen.” By Wednesday, they acted on it, agreeing to a two-year, $22 million deal with right-hander Brad Keller.

This morning, ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote that the “best available” left-handed reliever is Matt Strahm, “who is likely to be traded by Philadelphia.”

Strahm is entering the final year of his contract and is set to make $7.5 million in 2026. He’s coming off yet another strong season, posting a 2.74 ERA in 66 appearances.

Report: Matt Strahm traded to the Royals

In a move that we all kind of saw coming (though maybe didn’t agree with), the Phillies reportedly have traded Matt Strahm to the Royals.

Strahm being traded has been whispered about all offseason. The team had three solid left handed relievers and the market for them was weak. It makes sense in that way plus the clearing of his salary. However, it being done in the days after their signing Brad Keller, it dampens the enthusiasm of having a really good bullpen for 2026. The price of having a budget, I suppose.

In return, the team looks to be getting Jonathan Bowlan, a right handed reliever. A solid reliever, he gives the Phillies a bit of right handed relief depth that they have lacked for a bit. He pitched to a 3.86 ERA (3.97 FIP) in 2025 in 44 1/3 innings for Kansas City, striking out 46 and walking 17.
