The 10 Best Horror Movies of 2025

You wouldn’t call 2025 an “off” year for horror — more like an odd one. Both A24 and Neon continued to back several scary-movie auteurs (the prolific Osgood Perkins, the brothers Danny and Michael Philippou) with mixed results. Shudder continued to mine the four corners of the globe for the weirdest, eeriest, and most outré the genre had to offer. It was a good time to be a Stephen King — sorry, “Richard Bachman” — fan, provided you loved his more dystopian work as opposed to his traditional things-that-go-bump-in-the-night offerings; as for the It-related series Welcome to Derry that dropped on HBO, let’s just say mileage may vary. Sequels and spin-offs, some decent and others detestable, came and went. We have to admit that going into 2025, we did not have Warners dominating the field for the preceding 12 months on our bingo card. And yet… well, see below.

It’s hard to look at the astounding box-office and critical success of Sinners and Weapons and say 2025 was not a great year for horror. And yet, here I am, bravely doing it anyway: 2025 was not a great year for horror. While this assessment sounds counter-intuitive amid headlines about those two films’ record-breaking box office and potential for getting past the Oscars’ genre bias, there were fewer standouts to celebrate than in years past. For every horror film that lived up to the hype, there were more disappointments — consider a time when Wolf Man and Him were hotly anticipated. There were also a number of widely acclaimed movies that didn’t quite resonate with me despite skillful filmmaking and potent imagery: 28 Years Later, Bring Her Back, and Frankenstein among them.

The Two Best Horror Characters Of 2025 Invented New Ways To Scare Us

Don't bleach any skulls or snap any twigs — this article contains major spoilers for both "Weapons" and "28 Years Later."

2025 has been a scary year at the movies. The horror genre positively flourished with critics and at the box office, with "The Conjuring: Last Rites," "Sinners," and "Final Destination: Bloodlines" cleaning up financially and earning solid reactions from audiences — especially "Sinners," which has been universally heralded as one of the year's very best films in general. There's something else that horror movies did well this year: create innovative, terrifying characters to shock us, scare us, and teach us something.

Yeah, I know "teach us something" is super nebulous, so let me introduce the two characters who shook up the horror genre for the better this year. In one corner, we have "Aunt" Gladys Lily from Weapons, played by the unbelievable Amy Madigan (who should get an Oscar nomination for her role). In the other, we have the kindly, deeply rundown Dr. Ian Kelson from Danny Boyle's long-awaited sequel "28 Years Later," portrayed by Ralph Fiennes (who has a few Oscar nominations but honestly could get one for this film in a world where the Academy appreciated horror). If you've seen both of these films, as I have, you're probably wondering why Gladys and Kelson are even being mentioned in the same breath.
