Lionel Messi's "GOAT Tour" of India was marred by chaotic scenes Saturday after fans threw ripped up seats and invaded the pitch during the Argentina star's brief appearance.

Messi's tour will see him travel from Kolkata to Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. However, it did not get off to a dream start, as his appearance was reportedly cut to just 20 minutes due to the violence.

The highlight of tour's opening day was meant to be the unveiling of a 70-foot Messi statue — which is reported to be the largest statue of a footballer ever created.

Anger at Lionel Messi 'GOAT' India tour as fans throw chairs and bottles at stadium event

Angry fans attending Lionel Messi's tour of India ripped up seats and threw items towards the pitch after his appearance at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium.

Thousands of adoring supporters had paid up to 12,000 rupees (£100; $133) to catch a glimpse of the football star, but were left disappointed when he emerged to walk around the pitch, and was obscured by a large group of officials and celebrities.

When the Argentina and Inter Miami forward was whisked away early by security after around 20 minutes, elements of the crowd turned hostile.

West Bengal's chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, said she was "deeply disturbed and shocked" by the events.

Lionel Messi’s India tour organiser ‘detained’, say police, after ‘deeply disturbing’ chaos – The Athletic

The organiser of Lionel Messi’s tour of India has been detained, local police say, after the footballer’s brief appearance at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata ended in chaos.

Footage from India’s ANI news agency showed hundreds of fans invading the pitch, ripping up seats, throwing objects, vandalising the stands and dismantling goal nets at the 85,000-capacity stadium after Messi’s brief appearance on Saturday at the ticketed event.

Thousands of fans had paid up to 12,000 rupees (£100; $133 — several times the average Indian weekly salary) for access to the event, but ANI details that the 38-year-old Argentina and Inter Miami forward spent just 20 minutes in the stadium, where he was closely surrounded by a large group of people including club team-mates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.
