Pete Alonso driving to MLB Winter Meetings to meet with interested teams
ORLANDO, Fla. — Pete Alonso’s residence in Tampa has turned these Winter Meetings into something of a home game for the free-agent slugger.
To that end, Alonso will take the 90-minute drive to central Florida on Tuesday, according to sources, to meet in person with interested suitors that include the Red Sox and Orioles.
It is unclear if Alonso will meet with Mets officials during his visit. Last winter as a free agent, Alonso didn’t meet with team brass until February, when the two sides reached an agreement on a two-year deal worth $54 million that contained an opt-out.
The Post reported in October that Alonso, who opted out after the World Series, has sought at least a seven-year contract.
Red Sox ‘possibly’ set to meet with key free agent target soon at Winter Meetings
ORLANDO — Ordinarily, teams meet with rival executives and agents over the course of baseball’s winter meetings. But the Red Sox could be set to meet directly with one of the players to whom they’ve been linked.
Pete Alonso, who would fit the profile of a run-producing bat the Sox have been seeking, is expected to drive here from his home in Tampa and meet in-person with a number of interested clubs, according to a report by the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
A source close to Alonso responded “Possibly,(but) not confirmed yet,” when asked if the Sox were one the teams with whom he would meet.
