How MLS keeps getting better beyond Messi's magic — but no one seems to care

The 'Futbol Americas' crew react to Inter Miami's stunning 5-1 victory over New York City to claim the Eastern conference MLS Cup title. (1:44)

That could apply to anything that has happened in MLS this season. With most of the league's matches airing on Apple TV and behind the MLS Season Pass paywall, fewer people were watching America's domestic soccer league in its final full season before the 2026 World Cup.

Of course, we can't confirm those numbers because every trillion-dollar streamer protects its viewership data like it's Area 51. And every time someone with knowledge of the data talks about the data, we have no reason to believe what they say because, well, they have no reason to tell us the truth. Just take MLS commissioner Don Garber's comments from earlier this season that viewership is up "almost 50% compared to last year." Meanwhile, league-wide attendance is down from last season. Only one of those two things is a verifiable fact.

It all comes down to this. Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps will face off on Saturday in South Florida, a match that will see both teams play in their first-ever MLS Cup Final.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Major League Soccer, there are still quite a few reasons to watch this game. It will be the final game of Sergio Busquets’ illustrious career, and it could very well be the final game of Luis Suarez’s Miami career, with the Uruguayan being leapfrogged in the pecking order by Argentine teenager Matteo Silvetti in recent weeks. Whilst Busquets has emerged as one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time, Jordi Alba has staked his claim as one of the best fullbacks of all time, and he too will be looking to close out his professional career with a title.
