King Tides About to Slam Santa Barbara Coast
Water pounded Santa Barbaraâs coastline on November 6 for the first king tides of the year â flooding beaches and parking lots and jumping the walls of usually dry lookouts at places like Butterfly Beach and Campus Point. Â
This weekend marks round two of these extraordinarily high tides, which occur when the sun, moon, and Earth align, pulling the surf to extreme highs and lows. They are typically at least one foot above the average high tide, according to the California Coastal Commission.Â
Santa Barbara is expected to see tides up to 7.23 feet high each morning from Thursday, December 4, through Saturday, December 7. The royally high tides will inundate beaches from Goleta to Ventura and have the potential to damage property and other infrastructure.

Dig out your waders and grab your cameras â the king tides are coming!
This yearâs king tides will roll in during high tide on Thursday morning â anywhere from 10:05 to 10:50 a.m. â and continue through Friday, though high-than-usual tides are still expected through Saturday morning.
If youâre new to the coast and/or youâve no idea what these regal waves entail, king tides are the super-high tides that occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun align just so during a new or full moon, resulting in some of the biggest waves tides of the year. Estimates from the California King Tides Project indicate that this yearâs king tides will exceed 9.85 feet in some areas â about 1.5 feet higher than average high tide â and bring flooding to low-lying areas around Humboldt Bay.
