Reed Sheppard's Rise Has Led Rockets Renewed Energy

The Houston Rockets have shown flashes of the team many projected them to be coming into the season. While the defense hasn't quite returned to the elite level it was at last season, the offense has clearly taken several large steps forward to become an elite offensive squad. Much of the credit belongs to the performance of Alperen Sengun and Kevin Durant, the two offensive dynamos running the show for Houston.

However, some of the team's reserves have been making major contributions, especially second-year player Reed Sheppard.

Sheppard has shown major improvement this year on both sides of the floor. His ability to knock down deep-range shots at a high level has been a major boost to the team's shooting percentages from beyond the three-point line.

Many believe the Rockets need to trade for a veteran point guard and they are wrong.

Last season, as he saw himself going back and forth from the G-League and sparingly seeing the court in the NBA, it was clear that the 2024-2025 Houston Rockets and Reed Sheppard were not on the same timeline. Reed did put up some impressive numbers in the Rio Grande Valley. In three games he averaged 30.7 points-per-game, 8.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. Reed also started three games in the NBA. In those games he averaged 19.7 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. including a career high 25 points on 58 percent shooting from the field and 42.9 percent from three, against SGA and the OKC Thunder.

The Houston Rockets drafted Reed Sheppard at No. 3 overall in the 2024 first round for a reason, and his last few games are showing why.

Over his last four outings, the 21-year-old has scored at least 12 points in each, all after having consecutive games as a double-figure scorer only once over his first 58 career appearances.

During that eight-day stretch, the Kentucky product is averaging 16.3 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.3 steals in 24.3 minutes while shooting 65.8% overall and 60.0% from 3-point range.

The Rockets went +5.3 with Sheppard on the floor in those games, and Houston (7-3) has won seven of its last eight, overall. So, most notably, Sheppard’s production is contributing to positive team results.
