MADRID — As Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota dined with his parents and brother Tuesday night, one thought dominated their discussion: Can you believe football took Mariota from a tiny high school in Hawaii many years ago to starting in the first NFL game played in Spain?

The NFL’s first game in Spain will match two quarterbacks from the same high school on almost the other side of the world.

Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins and Marcus Mariota of the Washington Commanders will be the starting quarterbacks when their teams square off at 8:30 a.m. CST Sunday at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. NFL Network will televise the game.

“Tua and myself, like we grew up in the middle Pacific far away from here,” Mariota said, “and the fact of the matter that we get a chance to be a part of this game is very special, and I don’t take that for granted at all.
