'We're going into a hornet's nest.' No. 23 Creighton visits No. 19 Gonzaga in highly-anticipated Top 25 showdown
As season-opening wins go, Creighton’s 92-76 decision over South Dakota last Wednesday was on the more unsettling side.
That was the general vibe from two members of Creighton’s coaching staff after the Bluejays wrapped up a game where they led by as many as 24 points but also conceded a few troubling statistical advantages to an overmatched opponent from the Summit League.
Knowing what the Bluejays would be up against five days later, South Dakota’s 21-19 edge in offensive rebounding may have been the main concern. The Coyotes’ 48 paint points weren’t a great sign, either.
If proper corrections weren’t made prior to visiting No. 19 Gonzaga on Tuesday, Creighton coach Greg McDermott acknowledged the No. 23 Bluejays could be in for a long, painful night at McCarthey Athletic Center, speaking as someone who’s been there before.
Creighton vs. Gonzaga Preview: A Test of Tempo, Toughness, and Depth
Top-25 clash at the Kennel. Gonzaga hosts Creighton on ESPN at 7:00 PM PST in an early test of pace, and toughness.
Gonzaga beat Oklahoma by 15 on Saturday and looked like a team with a ridiculous ceiling, still figuring out how all the pieces fit together. The important stuff was there: Graham Ike controlled the paint, Braden Huff ran secondary actions, and the defense absolutely bottled up Oklahoma from all points on the floor. Gonzaga’s depth and versatility overwhelmed the Sooners and systematically stripped them one by one of their contingency plans on both sides of the floor.
Gonzaga’s activity on the glass created extra possessions, and the half-court defense reduced Oklahoma to late-clock decisions. Polls released on Monday reflected that level of control as Gonzaga moved to No. 19 in the country.

Mark Few did not take it easy on his Gonzaga squad in the early part of the 2025-26 college basketball season. After a buy game against Texas Southern on Monday, Nov. 3, the Zags hosted a strong SEC team in Oklahoma at the Spokane Arena on Saturday, Nov. 8, and managed to secure a big time 15-point victory.
Gonzaga's reward for the win is a date with the No. 23 ranked Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 PM at the McCarthey Athletic Center, before a true road game against Big 12 opponent Arizona State in Tempe on Friday night.
Creighton and Gonzaga have squared off three times dating back to 2017, with coach Few's team picking up a win each time – including in the 2021 NCAA Tournament en route to the program's second national championship appearance.
