November Nights Are Dazzling With These Three Meteor Showers. How to Watch Like a Pro
You won't need binoculars or a telescope, but you will need to get away from city lights to see one of the meteor showers peak tonight.
November will feature three separate meteor showers, all appearing within a couple of weeks of each other.
Skygazers, get ready for an active night sky this week and next. Following the supermoon last week, we've also got three annual meteor showers happening right now: the Northern Taurids, which peaks Tuesday night; the Southern Taurids, which has already peaked but is ongoing through November; and the Leonids, which peaks early next week.Â
While these showers aren't as prolific as the biggest ones, including August's Perseids and January's Quadrantids, you can still marvel at meteors with a bit of luck and some tips we'll provide.
Heads up, Austin: North Taurids meteor shower could toss a few fireballs our way
Central Texas skies could deliver a small show this week as the Northern Taurids send a few bright meteors over Austin.
The Northern Taurids are a long-running meteor shower that produces a few slow, bright meteors per hour with a higher chance of eye-catching fireballs. The stream is active from late October to early December and does not have a sharp peak, but Tuesday into Wednesday is the best window this week.
You do not need a telescope. Lie back and scan the entire sky. If you want a landmark, find Orion rising in the east, then look up and left to spot Taurus and the Pleiades. That spot in the sky is called the radiant, which is where the meteors seem to originate, but you can see them anywhere overhead; mainly just avoid city lights.
