How Maryland is protecting its residents during the federal shutdown

On Friday, Governor Moore announced another set of resources to support Marylanders who have been affected by the government shutdown.

The shutdown has reached 38 days, marking it the longest in government history.

Senate Democrats proposed a plan to end the shutdown on Friday if Republicans agreed to a one-year extension of health care tax credits, which would make health insurance premiums cheaper. However, Republicans rejected the offer.

At the beginning of the government shutdown on October 1, the Moore-Miller Administration administered a series a resources to help Marylanders who would be impacted.

Some of these resources included unemployment insurance, food assistance, housing resources, and more.

Governor announces more help for Marylanders hit by government shutdown

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (7News) — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced Friday he is directing additional state resources to assist federal workers impacted by the federal government shutdown.

The state is making an additional $700 interest-free loan available to federal employees who are working without pay during the shutdown. So far, more than 2000 people have applied for a loan. They will now be eligible for a total of $1,400. That money must be paid back within 45 days after the shutdown ends.

Furloughed federal workers may apply for unemployment benefits in the jurisdiction where they work.

Free rides on transit will also continue for federal workers. In order to obtain these services, individuals need to have an active CharmPass account.
