Kat Abughazaleh, Illinois congressional candidate, indicted over Broadview protests, records show
CHICAGO – Kat Abughazaleh, a Democratic candidate for Congress from the Chicago area, was among six individuals indicted in federal court in connection with their protests at the ICE processing facility in suburban Broadview.
Federal prosecutors allege that Abughazaleh, along with Michael Rabbitt, Andre Martin, Catherine Sharp, Brian Straw, and Joselyn Walsh, tried to impede a federal agent at the Broadview facility on Sept. 26.
They allege that the group "surrounded" a government vehicle driven by the agent "with the intent to hinder and impede" the agent.
"This is a political prosecution and a gross attempt to silence dissent, a right protected under the First Amendment," she said in a video posted on X. "This case is a major push by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish anyone who speaks out against them."
Congressional Candidate Kat Abughazaleh Indicted Over Chicago ICE Protest
Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has indicted Democratic congressional hopeful Kat Abughazaleh, along with five others, for conspiring to impede the work of a federal law enforcement officer. The indictment makes Abughazaleh the latest Democratic figure to be targeted by the Trump administration for challenging the regime’s aggressive tactics.
Abughazaleh shared the news of her indictment on social media on Wednesday. “This is a political prosecution and a gross attempt to silence dissent, a right protected under the first amendment,” she says in the video.
The indictment accuses Abughazaleh — whose name is repeatedly misspelled in the document — of bracing her hands on the hood of an ICE vehicle that was attempting to drive through a group of protesters outside of the Broadview Processing Center, ICE’s Chicago command center.
