A depleted Bears secondary could help Lamar Jackson and the Ravens bounce back

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson returned to practice this week and hopes to return to the field on Sunday against the Bears, after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury. If he does, he’ll be facing an injury-riddled Bears secondary.

The Bears have been playing without their best cornerback, Jaylon Johnson, since he had core muscle surgery last month. Joining Johnson on injured reserve is cornerback Terrell Smith, while cornerback Zah Frazier is on the non-football injury list.

But while the Bears have managed to get by without those three, on Friday they ruled out two more starters in the secondary, nickel back Kyler Gordon and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. With five players out, the Bears are as depleted as any secondary in the league.

Roster Moves: Chicago Bears place two on IR, sign Ford and elevate two

The Chicago Bears on Saturday placed defensive back Kyler Gordon and offensive lineman Braxton Jones on Reserve/Injured and signed defensive lineman Jonathan Ford to the active roster.

The Bears have also elevated tight end Stephen Carlson and defensive back Dallis Flowers from the practice squad for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens. Per NFL regulation, all standard elevations revert back to the practice squad following the game.

Additionally, defensive lineman Austin Booker (knee) and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (knee) have been downgraded to OUT and remain on Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return.

Ford is in his second season with Chicago, appearing in three games this year (Weeks 4-7) along the defensive front, all victories, and in each of the final four games last season for the Bears. Ford entered the NFL as a seventh-round selection (234th overall) by the Green Bay Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft, spending each of his first three professional seasons with the Packers before being signed by the Bears to Chicago's active roster off of Green Bay's practice squad prior to Week 15 last season. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ford appeared in 50 career games (30 starts) over five collegiate seasons (2017-21) at Miami (Fla.), totaling 60 tackles, including three sacks, as well as one pass defensed and one forced fumble.

Bears to be down top 3 cornerbacks vs. Ravens

The Chicago Bears will face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday without starting cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler Gordon, who have been ruled out for Week 8.

Stevenson sustained a shoulder injury in Chicago's 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints and did not finish the game. He did not practice this week and is considered "day-to-day, week-to-week," according to coach Ben Johnson, who also gave the same designation to tight end Cole Kmet, who has a back injury and will miss the first game of his career against Baltimore.

Both Stevenson and Kmet will avoid injured reserve, according to Johnson.

Gordon was a full participant in practice Wednesday before injuring both his groin and calf in practice and being limited Thursday. He was a non-participant Friday before he was ruled out.
