Celtics have a new starting center
Neemias Queta is set to become the Boston Celtics' starting center in the 2025-26 season, stepping up after key departures of Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet.
The Boston Celtics faced salary constraints in the offseason, creating a big opportunity for center Neemias Queta, who is now set to take on a starting role.
With the three big men — Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet — ahead of him on last season's depth chart all departing, Queta has become the team's starting center, as Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe notes.
Queta understands that starting for a franchise with championship aspirations comes with added responsibility.
Celtics HC Joe Mazzulla Appears to Reveal His Starting Center
With the Celtics facing a massive overhaul at the center position, it appears that head coach Joe Mazzulla might have tipped his cap as to who will take over the starting spot.
The Celtics have three centers on the current roster, all of whom are 26 or younger with limited experience at being significant contributors throughout their careers.

Mazzulla made it seem that 7-footer Neemias Queta is the current favorite for the starting center role over contenders Luka Garza and Amari Williams.
âWeâre going to be hard on Neemi and Iâm really looking forward to coaching him throughout the year," Mazzulla told Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe. "But as I told him, this is what you worked your whole life for, a chance to start for the Celtics, and you see this with players when they step into different phases of their career.

Derrick White on what he thinks about Neemias Queta starting for the Boston Celtics
If anyone is worried about Neemias Queta potentially starting for the Boston Celtics this season, it is not Derrick White. The veteran Celtics guard recently weighed in on the debate over whether Queta is ready to take such a big leap forward in terms of his role with the team after the Portuguese big man became the next man up for Boston when Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet left the organization.
And while the trepidation over the gulf between Queta's former role as a third big to his new one as a primary one on at least some nights to start the Celtics' 2025-26 campaign is understandable, White does not seem to be too concerned about it. "I think he's ready," said the University of Colorado – Boulder alum after a recent practice. "I think he learned a lot these last two years."
