Cooper Flagg’s been the best player in every gym so far. Why should NBA be any different?

NEWPORT, Maine — It’s late on an August morning at Nokomis Regional High in the tiny town in rural Maine. The hardwood floor inside the school’s small gymnasium beams with a glossy shine. It looks brand new, but it’s not. Remodeled, but nowhere near untouched. It’s where Cooper Flagg took the first shots of his high school career.

In one sensational freshman season, he earned the black Gatorade Player of the Year banner that hangs on one wall of the gym, adjacent to seven state championship banners, including the one commemorating the school’s only basketball title, one Flagg helped deliver.

Mavericks Notes: Flagg, Gafford, Nembhard, Washington

Unlike most No. 1 overall picks, Cooper Flagg didn’t wind up with a rebuilding team. Landing on the Mavericks gives him peace of mind entering his NBA regular-season debut against San Antonio on Wednesday.

“We’re a really deep team, so I think that kind of takes that pressure off of me to just be myself and not worry about expectations to be like anyone else, but just to be me and help this team win as much as I can,” he told Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News.

Flagg believes the season debut could be the start of something big for the team this season.
