Vikings holding off on long-term QB decision with Carson Wentz to start on Sunday vs. Eagles
The Vikings return from their bye week with Carson Wentz as their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Eagles, with the former Philadelphia first-rounder set to face his former team.
Meanwhile, J.J. McCarthy, the 2024 first-round pick who began the season as the starter, will be the Vikings' emergency third QB as he recovers from a Week 2 high ankle sprain.
The question of how to handle the QB situation has been a constant one for Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell each time he has addressed the media of late. He has avoided making any declarations until McCarthy is fully healthy.

EAGAN, Minn. â All of these years later, all of these hits later, Carson Wentz is still here. Standing before a group of reporters and listening to an all too familiar set of questions.
Has he thought about sliding more? Could he benefit from getting down?
Of course, heâs thought about it, and of course, heâd benefit. His knee might still contain its original ligament. Heâd have much less exposure to X-rays from scanning his ribs. Currently, his left shoulder would not require a harness-type contraption.

Rapoport's report doesn't help quiet the J.J. McCarthy 'soft benching' conspiracy theory
For all we know, there's zero reason to believe the conspiracy theory that J.J. McCarthy is the subject of a "soft benching" in wake of Carson Wentz leading the Vikings to a 3-2 record while McCarthy remains sidelined with a high ankle sprain.
As we wrote on Friday, all anyone has to do to figure out why McCarthy hasn't returned to the starting role is check a calendar. It's been five weeks since McCarthy suffered the high ankle sprain in Week 2 against the Falcons, and high ankle sprains, according to every reputable medical source on the planet, take 6-8 weeks to heal. Additionally, the top NFL insiders have been saying McCarthy's timeline to return was 4-6 weeks.
