Guardians Lose 6-Year Veteran Hurler to Free Agency

After a season that could be described as just about anything but normal, the Cleveland Guardians' roster turnover is underway.

Major league free agents aren't eligible to sign with new teams until five days after the World Series concludes. But players who finished the season off the 40-man rosters and meet certain eligibility criteria can elect minor-league free agency and begin their searches for new teams a bit early.

Carlos HernĂĄndez, who arrived in Cleveland in a July 31 waiver claim, was outrighted off the 40-man roster in August. He didn't have much of a shot at the postseason roster, and with Cleveland eliminated in the Wild Card Series, he decided to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Ex-Royals Flamethrower Cuts Ties With Guardians After Rough Season

For a time, it seemed as if Carlos HernĂĄndez would be an important piece of the Kansas City Royals' playoff-contending bullpen.

Not many people are blessed with the ability to throw 100 mph, and HernĂĄndez can do so fairly routinely. But as is the case with many a flamethrower, spotty command has given him fits over the years.

After a wild season that saw him play for three organizations upon leaving the Royals in March, HernĂĄndez is back on the open market.

On Friday, HernĂĄndez elected free agency at the end of his season with the Cleveland Guardians, according to the official transactions log on his roster page. He also pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers this year.
