Cubs tab Pomeranz as opener vs. Brewers in deciding Game 5

MILWAUKEE — Left-hander Drew Pomeranz will start for the Cubs in Saturday night’s winner-take-all Game 5 of the National League Division Series at American Family Field.

Pomeranz, who has thrown five perfect innings this postseason between the NL Wild Card Series and NLDS, has not tossed more than a frame in any of his five appearances.

Time will tell how Chicago sees its path to 27 outs, as manager Craig Counsell called it during Friday’s Zoom. The Cubs have right-handed bulk options in Aaron Civale, Colin Rea and Ben Brown who could follow Pomeranz. Or Chicago could go with a straight bullpen game, as Counsell did say everyone except Game 4 starter Matthew Boyd would be available.

'Doesn't feel real': How veteran turned into unsung hero in Cubs' bullpen | Cubs News

CHICAGO — Drew Pomeranz walked off the Wrigley Field mound in the seventh inning on Thursday, the thunderous roar of the 41,770 fans in attendance blaring and soaked it all in.

He wasn’t supposed to be a key reliever on a Cubs team one win away from the NL Championship Series after beating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0 at Wrigley Field to force a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday at American Family Field. Pomeranz tossed a perfect seventh inning and has yet to allow a baserunner in five appearances in October.

Drew Pomeranz will start Game 5 for the Cubs

The Cubs are going with an opener in the deciding NLCS game.

Craig Counsell didn’t announce a starter for NLDS Game 5 during his presser Friday evening. It was widely assumed that it could be a bullpen game, a game with an opener, or possibly Shōta Imanaga starting.

Drew Pomeranz is, quite clearly, going to be an opener. He did this four times during the season and three times had a 1-2-3 inning, the only exception being July 5 against the Cardinals, where he walked a pair and allowed two runs.

In the NLDS, Pomeranz has thrown three times and had a 1-2-3 inning each time, striking out five of the nine Brewers hitters he has faced. He threw 15 pitches in Game 4.
