Ovechkin excited to begin 21st season with Capitals, 'I still love the game'
Washington captain focused on another Stanley Cup run, 900 goals, unsure on playing future
ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals had the day off from practice Sunday, their last without skating before they open the season by hosting the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; HBO MAX, TNT).
Ovechkin still spent part of the day at Washington's practice facility, though, rooting on his 7-year-old son, Sergei, in his youth league game. Although Ovechkin is the NHL all-time leader in goals after passing Wayne Gretzky last season, the 40-year-old left wing is not much different from any other hockey parent when he and wife, Nastya, watch Sergei play.
Alex Ovechkin is ready for his 21st season in Washington and his first after turning 40
ARLINGTON, Va. â When Alex Ovechkin was asked what he is most looking forward to on opening night this season, his answer was a subtle reminder that the 40-year-old version of the star forward is different than the player who entered the NHL two decades ago.
âWarmups,â he said with a grin. âI hope my kids are going to make it for warmups.â
Ovechkin begins season No. 21 with the Washington Capitals when they host the Boston Bruins. Itâs hard to imagine 2025-26 being more eventful than 2024-25, when he broke Wayne Gretzkyâs record and become the leagueâs career leader in goals, but if last season was filled with anticipation â and ultimately celebration â this one may be more about appreciation.
