Star center Connor McDavid will remain with the Edmonton Oilers, signing a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $12.5 million, the team announced Monday.

McDavid made his decision Monday morning, an NHL source told ESPN, and the contract talks were completed within hours.

He was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season — his 11th with the Oilers — after signing an eight-year, $100 million deal in July 2017. The potential availability of the player considered the best in the world sparked speculation about his future, but remaining in Edmonton was always considered the likeliest outcome.

EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday they have signed forward and team captain Connor McDavid to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $12.5 million.

McDavid (6'1", 195 lbs.) skated in 67 games in 2024-25, recording 26 goals and 74 assists for 100 points. Coming off his 10th season in an Oilers uniform, the 28-year-old added another seven goals and 26 assists through 22 playoff games, helping propel the club to consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances the past two seasons.

"Connor's commitment to our team and our city is surpassed only by his singular focus of bringing a Stanley Cup back to fans of the Edmonton Oilers," said Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Stan Bowman.

The 28-year-old NHL superstar is committing to the Oilers for at least a couple of more years, as he and the team agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract extension on Monday that will keep him in Edmonton through the 2027-28 season.

The $12.5 million average annual value is the same he’s been making since his eight-year, $100 million contract kicked for the 2018-19 season.

“Our journey here continues,” McDavid wrote on X along with several photos from Oilers games with the 2025-26 NHL season set to begin on Tuesday.

McDavid was entering the final year of his contract, and the center’s future was the subject of speculation for the last four months, ever since the Oilers fell to the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight season.
