Do you remember that gut-punch moment when you found out Santa Claus wasn’t real? Or that Hallmark pretty much invented the Easter bunny?
Well, I had one of those moments recently. For years, I thought Oct. 2 was National Kiss a Custodian Day. Turns out, it’s actually National Custodial Workers Recognition Day.
Being a school custodian is still the best job in the world. And here’s why:
National Custodian Day Symbolizes 40 Years of Appreciation
First created in 1985, National Custodian Day takes place Oct. 2 each year and offers an opportunity to appreciate the custodians who work hard to keep facilities clean, sanitary, and maintained.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, National Today offers three ways to best honor the spirit of National Custodian Day:
National Today further suggests activities everyone can do to celebrate their custodians.

Only 15% of Americans are worried about contracting West Nile virus or dengue fever in the next three months
West Nile virus reigns as the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the continental U.S., and this year is expected to be a higher-than-average year. As of Sept. 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 1,324 cases across 42 states, including 874 neuroinvasive cases—the severe form of the disease that affects the brain and central nervous system. Colorado overwhelmingly leads the U.S. case count with more than 241 reported cases as of Sept. 30.

Custodian’s artistry boosts school culture in many ways
Grandville — National School Custodian Appreciation Day is officially celebrated each year on Oct. 2. But at West Elementary, students and staff celebrate “Mr. Brett” Davis every day.
It’s hardly an exaggeration: A printout of the custodian’s school picture has hung next to a sign reading “Employee of the Month” in West’s main office for the past 37 months.
And there’s this: “West wouldn’t be West without Brett, really,” said third-grade teacher Heather Smith. “He works so hard, but then he is adding bits of jewels for us, all day long.”
With eight years at West under his (tool) belt, Davis has embedded himself into school culture in ways that are both meaningful and unexpected. In his official role as custodian, he mends things that need fixing before they break. He takes care of teacher work requests before they can be submitted. He notes inefficiencies and makes suggestions to improve the learning environment for students.
