Red Sox's Giolito expected out all of postseason

NEW YORK — Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito is expected to miss the entire postseason with an elbow injury, manager Alex Cora said Tuesday.

Giolito had already been ruled out for Boston's wild-card series against the New York Yankees before visiting a doctor in Alabama on Tuesday. Giolito received relatively good news — tests revealed no structural damage, so he won't need surgery — but Cora characterized his chances of pitching again in 2025 as "slim."

Giolito would have started Game 3 of the wild-card series if the game is needed. Without him, the Red Sox are expected to start rookie left-hander Connelly Early.

When the Boston Red Sox begin the American League Wild Card round, Garrett Crochet will start game one. Brayan Bello will follow him in game two, but game three remains up in the air.

To many, Lucas Giolito seemed like the obvious choice to start a potential game three. According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, Giolito won’t be on the roster.

“Lucas [Giolito], he’s not going to be on the roster,” Cora said. “He’s been battling with his elbow the last few days.”

Yankees catch break as Red Sox lose starter Lucas Giolito in wild-card injury blow

Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito will miss the AL wild-card series because of an injured elbow.

A 31-year-old right-hander, Giolito had been expected to start the third game of the best-of-three series Thursday, following Garrett Crochet (18-5) and Brayan Bello (11-9) in Boston’s rotation.

“It’s a big blow,” Crochet said. “He’s a great arm and I think that he strikes fear in opposing lineups.”

Giolito went to be examined by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center.

Dugas repaired the ulnar collateral ligament in Giolito’s right elbow with internal brace surgery on March 12 last year.
