Hurricane forecast: Imelda strengthens as US Southeast coast feels impacts. Bermuda prepares for twin storms
Tropical Storm Imelda is strengthening north of the Bahamas and beginning its hard right turn eastward, sparing the US coast from a direct strike. But the storm is still churning up dangerous surf, rip currents, coastal flooding and beach erosion along the Southeast coast. Meanwhile, Bermuda faces a rare one-two punch from Hurricane Humberto and Imelda this week.
Humberto, which briefly exploded into a rare Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds Saturday, is now a large Category 2 hurricane located just a few hundred miles east of Imelda. Humbertoâs massive size will compound the hazards for US beaches this week, driving deadly rip currents and big waves farther north along the East Coast than Imelda would alone.
How powerful Hurricane Humberto helped steer Imelda away from US landfall
FOX Weather Meteorologists Stephen Morgan and Marissa Torres explain how major Hurricane Humberto in the Atlantic has played a role in Tropical Storm Imelda's track. The stronger storm was able to guide Imelda away from the U.S.
Tropical Storm Imelda is not going to make landfall in the southeastern U.S. as some early models indicated, and its sharp right turn out into the Atlantic is thanks to big influences by the much more powerful Hurricane Humberto.
Humberto topped out with 160-mph winds over the weekend as a Category 5 hurricane. The current track of Imelda is following a very similar northeasterly path.
