A tropical depression just formed and ended the Atlantic’s strange storm drought. Here’s where future Gabrielle is headed

A new tropical depression has formed in the central Atlantic Ocean and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Gabrielle, putting an end to an unusual nearly three-week stretch with no storms during the peak of hurricane season.

Tropical Depression Seven formed Wednesday morning 1,185 miles from the Caribbean’s northern Leeward Islands. It had sustained winds of 35 mph at the time, just 4 mph shy of tropical storm-status at 39 mph.

It’s expected to become a tropical storm by Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center. From there, the system will likely strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend as it tracks to the west-northwest. This will be the first tropical storm in the Atlantic since Fernand fizzled on August 28.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle will finally form later today in the central Atlantic, and is forecast to become a hurricane this weekend as the hurricane season finally awakens after a long peak-season slumber.

Tropical Depression Seven formed early Wednesday morning between the Lesser Antilles and Africa, almost 1,200 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands.

This new system is forecast to become Tropical Storm Gabrielle later today, the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

Fortunately, for now, it appears Gabrielle will curl well to the north of the Leeward Islands this weekend. Some high surf, rip currents and perhaps some outer bands of showers are possible, there.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Not a single named storm has formed in the Atlantic Ocean in nearly three weeks, even though it’s the peak of hurricane season.

“Where the heck are the Atlantic #hurricanes?” Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University, wrote recently on X.

Tropical Storm Fernand was the last named storm to form this season. It was short-lived, forming on Aug. 23 and dissipating on Aug. 28 while remaining over open water.

This is only the second time that no named storms have formed during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season since modern record-keeping began in 1950, according to Ernesto Rodríguez, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service forecast office in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
