Metro Vancouver population projection falls
According to a new population projection for Metro Vancouver, fewer people will be moving to the region than had been previously expected, due largely to federal immigration changes. Aaron McArthur reports.
Slower population growth for Metro Vancouver, reaching 4.2 million in 2051 | Urbanized
Following the Government of Canada’s policy changes in 2024 to slow down the pace of immigration over the coming years, there has been a need to recalibrate population growth estimates.
For the Metro Vancouver region, which has historically been one of Canada’s main landing areas for newcomers, there will be a notable corresponding drop in population growth over the short term.
According to a newly updated forecast by Metro Vancouver Regional District, the region is now expected to see an annual average of 42,500 net new residents — instead of the previously projected rate of 50,000 per year. The region will grow from 3.124 million in 2024 to 3.378 million by 2031, 3.795 million in 2041, and 4.188 million in 2051. This is based on the medium-growth scenario, which is being used as the baseline forecast, as it is deemed to be the “most likely outcome.”
