Charlotte ready for Belichick, Tar Heels and biggest home game in school history

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina isn’t the only school capitalizing on the buzz around Bill Belichick’s debut season with the Tar Heels.

Charlotte, which hosts the Tar Heels on Saturday, sold out of its allotment of season tickets for the first time in school history in large part due to UNC’s presence on the home schedule. Charlotte also hired former Ohio coach Tim Albin in the offseason.

Charlotte restarted its football program in 2013 as an independent in the Football Championship Subdivision. The 49ers joined Conference USA two years later and are now in the American. North Carolina will be the third team from the ACC, SEC, Big Ten or Big 12 conferences to play at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Charlotte’s campus, joining Duke (2021) and Maryland (2023).

UNC will make its first road trip of 2025 when it makes the short journey to the Queen City to take on Charlotte Saturday night. It’s the program’s first-ever visit to the 49ers’ Jerry Richardson Stadium.
