Orioles 6-2 Padres (Sep 2, 2025) Game Recap

SAN DIEGO — — Emmanuel Rivera tied his career high with four RBI on a pair of two-out singles and Tyler Wells won his season debut for the Baltimore Orioles, who beat San Diego 6-2 on Tuesday night to keep the scuffling Padres from gaining on the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jeremiah Johnson homered for the second consecutive night and drove in two runs for the Orioles. Baltimore, last in the AL East, has won two straight against the Padres and will go for a series sweep on Wednesday.

San Diego, which has lost three in a row and seven of nine, remained 2 1/2 games behind Los Angeles, which lost 9-7 at Pittsburgh. The Padres are a game ahead of the New York Mets for the second of three National League wild cards.

Padres' engine idles when it's time to hit the gas

SAN DIEGO — The playoffs begin in four weeks. There's still time for the Padres to make a serious run at the National League West. There's time for them to make a push for a first-round bye. There’s time to ensure that, at the very least, home games will be played at Petco Park this postseason.

But that time isn’t infinite. And there’s less of it with every missed opportunity.

The Padres lost, 6-2, to the Orioles on Tuesday night — the fourth time in five days they’ve lost a game to an opponent outside the playoff picture. Nine days ago, they finished their series against the rival Dodgers tied atop the division. Since then, San Diego has lost three straight series and has fallen 2 1/2 games behind L.A. in the NL West.

Wells makes successful return and Orioles clinch series with 6-2 win

SAN DIEGO – Tyler Wells waited 508 days to pitch in a major league game. He could handle another 18 minutes.

Padres starter Yu Darvish threw 30 pitches in the top of the first inning, surrendered a home run to Jeremiah Jackson, hit two batters and issued a walk. The three strikeouts extended his stay on the mound while Wells paced in the dugout.

Finally able to pick up the baseball, Wells gave the Orioles five innings with two runs allowed and had teammates waiting to slap hands and hug him after his final batter in a 6-2 victory over the Padres before an announced sellout crowd of 42,536 at Petco Park.
