Cold front expected to bring relief from the high heat over Labor Day weekend

AUSTIN, Texas — The summer of 2025 has had its share of high heat here in Central Texas, but as Sept. 1 approaches, Austin is expected to see a cooler and wetter change in our weather pattern. 

Portions of the U.S. are already feeling their first tastes of fall, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s for the last week of August. 

While a bit ahead of schedule, meteorologists are tracking a Canadian air mass, which has settled into the Great Lakes and Northeast. This cooler air will attempt to trickle into Texas by the weekend and could keep afternoon temperatures below average through the extended forecast. 

Dallas weather: Cooler, wetter weather to impact Labor Day weekend

DALLAS – Dallas is about to experience a significant shift in weather. We have one more hot summer day ahead of us before a cold front brings cooler, rainy weather just in time for the long holiday weekend.

We have another hot summer day in store, but there is a chance for storms later today.

Thursday will definitely feel like summer! Expect plenty of sunshine and a high heat index due to temperatures in the upper 90s and high humidity. The heat index could reach up to 105 degrees. 

Later in the day, a cold front moving down from Oklahoma will bring gusty thunderstorms to North Texas. These storms could bring wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph and hail the size of nickels or even quarters. The storms will be scattered but strong, mainly affecting areas north of DFW before dying off overnight.
