Logan Gilbert's painful 2025 season must have Mariners rethinking his future

What was supposed to be another year of being a Cy Young Award contender for Logan Gilbert was derailed in late April by injury. Despite the roadblock, there wasn't much cause for concern after he had pitched to a 2.37 ERA and 2.19 FIP up to that point.

However, since he returned to the Seattle Mariners starting rotation in June, it doesn't seem like he has gotten back on track. With months of struggles and no recovery in sight, his future with the franchise is starting to get murkier.

At the start of the season, there were talks of a possible long-term contract being offered to Gilbert to delay his free agency. This was after the Mariners signed off on an extension for Cal Raleigh that has, at least in its first year, done wonders for the team.

Mariners – Athletics Game Preview

Logan Gilbert looks to rebound from a tough outing against Philadelphia

The Mariners try to eke out a series win against the A’s after a tough extra-inning loss last night, and Logan Gilbert attempts to rebound from one of the worst starts of his career last time out against Philadelphia. The Mariners have a lot to play for today, especially as the Astros look poised to sweep the Orioles; hopefully they’ll play like it. (Update: thank you oppositionally defiant Birbs, who beat the Astros 3-2 today)

Dominic Canzone remains on the bench against yet another lefty starter, but his outlook seems a little cloudier after Dan Wilson went to Luke Raley, rather than Canzone, in a pinch-hit opportunity last night. Per Wilson, Canzone is still experiencing discomfort after being hit by a pitch on the forearm during the Phillies series, although he is reportedly “feeling better.”

After dropping the first game of the series last night 3-2, the Athletics hope to rebound today against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington. The A’s still sit in last place in the American League West, while the Mariners are just two games behind the Astros in second place in the division.

Jeffrey Springs will take the mound tonight against a tough Mariners lineup. He’s currently 10-8 on the season with a 4.28 ERA. His last two starts have not gone well, lasting just 3+ and 4+ innings. We’ll need a stronger outing by the lefty Springs in order to bounce back in this series. He’ll go up against 27-year-old righty George Kirby tonight. He is 8-6 with a 4.22 ERA since getting his first start of the season on May 22.
