New York City commuters can share their opinions on the MTA's proposed fare increases

NEW YORK (WABC) — The MTA is holding two final public hearings on Wednesday to allow the public to weigh in on the proposed fare hikes.

If the MTA moves forward with its plan to raise fares, New Yorkers will pay 10 cents more, or $3, to ride the MTA's buses and trains, beginning in 2026.

The proposed increase would also make it more expensive to reach the MTA's weekly fare cap, which makes rides free after the first 12 trips in a week. The cap would rise from $34 to $36.

Increases on the LIRR and Metro-North will average 4.4% to 8%. And even tolls on the major crossings will go up roughly 7.5%.

MTA honcho Janno Lieber brushes off subway price hike concerns as New Yorkers rip failing transit system: 'Vultures'

MTA boss Janno Lieber tried to rebrand the looming spike in subway ride costs a “fare adjustment” Wednesday — laughing, chewing gum and twiddling his thumbs as New Yorkers ripped him and other transit officials over the plan.

“Welcome to the second MTA public hearing on the proposed fare adjustments,” Lieber said at the top of the forum — one of three that the transportation agency is holding this week — about the new $3 rate, which would go into effect as soon as January.

More than two dozen frustrated commuters showed up in person and via video to testify about the 10-cent increase for subway and bus fares, which would come on the heels of the hike to $2.90 in mid-2023 and the MTA’s $9 congestion pricing scheme.

Commuters still have time to weigh in on the MTA’s proposed fare and toll increases before the board votes this fall.

The final public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at the transit agency’s Brooklyn headquarters at 5 p.m. An earlier hearing was held at 10 a.m. Both are hybrid sessions, meaning riders can attend in person at 130 Livingston St. or join virtually via Zoom.

The plan would raise the base subway and bus fare from $2.90 to $3 in January.

Express bus riders would see a 25-cent increase per ride, while bridge and tunnel tolls could climb by 7.5%. Fares on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North could rise by more than 4%.
